It's his precise articulation I love. The vast majority of guitarists I listen to have broadly speaking come from the same place stylistically, which usually involves a bit of 'looseness'.

Oldfield always sounds to me as if he learned to play guitar without ever listening to anyone else, and therefore evolved his own unique, precise approach. Quite 'un-rock' but interesting because of that.

Great stuff!

Bungo, the unmistakeable guitar sound of Oldfield, it's funny how some people have a signature sound that you know immediately who is playing. For example

Dave Gilmour
Eddie Van Halen
Brian May

First gig I ever went to was Mike Oldfield at Wembley Arena in the late '70s.

Played teh whole of Incantations in the first half with Tubular Bells 2nd half.

I always loved his work as a guitarist. Try this bit of Incantations from 17.10 to 18.12.

NB Random factoid, Emma Freud was one of the young backing singers on that tour. Whatever happened to her?

Without tubular bells and not letting the musical halfwit Branson hear it or anywhere near it made virgin . The start of an empire .

I really don't know if I;ve heard anything other than Tubular Bells and if I did, I wasn't aware it was his.

Boring as it is though, Tubular Bells is a fantastic piece of music and he will have done well to have bettered that.

In Dulci Jubilo

Conjures up memories of a Friday night game at Upton Park (December 1979). The track was played during the halftime break, and some wag emerged from the West Side dancing to it, in the snow, naked from the waist down.
